Unranked Miramar Upset #3 St. Thomas Aquinas

There is no argument that Florida’s St. Thomas Aquinas has one of the finest football programs in the country.  Even so, the Raiders have fallen to Miramar, their kryptonite for the last three years.

The Miramar Patriots defeated Thomas Aquinas for the third consecutive time on Friday, September 20, when the two teams met on the football team.

The Raiders, who ranked 3rd in DigitalSports National Football Rankings, went into Friday’s game with confidence against the unranked Patriots.  After a well battled match, Miramar pulled through with a 22-20 victory over their rivals.

The momentum went back and forth between the two teams.  The Raiders marked ten points in the first quarter, to which Miramar responded with 13 second quarter points. Thomas Aquinas took the lead back with 10 more points in the third quarter.  Their seven point lead going into the final quarter was not enough.  The Patriots came back with nine points to take the victory.

In the early stages of the fourth quarter, David Lee tackled the Raiders’ running back in their endzone for a safety.  Just 35 seconds later, Cameron Rigby rushed in for a Miramar touchdown to complete the 9 point swing.

Miramar’s strategy was to force St. Thomas Aquinas to take to the air by shutting down their running game.  In a great display of defense, the Patriots did just that, holding the Raiders to only 14 total rushing yards in 29 attempts.

Though not currently holding a position in DigitalSports National Football Ranking, Miramar has shown that they are a force to be reckoned with.  With a big upset over Thomas Aquinas, 3rd ranked by DigitalSports, the Patriots will be doing all they can to get onto the table.

Their next game is at Western High School on September 27 at 7:00p.

Key Players:

Cameron Rigby- 10 rushes for 35 yards, game-winning TD

David Lee- made tackle for safety
